During the penultimate weekend in May 2021, we welcomed 25+ lacrosse players to train with us at The Oxford Academy. The weekend was a chance for these potential new recruits to get a taste of what Lions is all about, and for us to trial them as well to see if they would be the right fit for our squad.
The weekend was our biggest yet, and although it was met with downpours, the usual Lions spirit saw us through. Day 1 had our players split equally into two groups, with Performance and Development players mixing together with our guests. The Lions coaches tested all elements of their ability including stick skills, agility, lacrosse IQ and attitude, and it's safe to say that the trialists were put through their paces!
After a long evening of reviews and decision making, day 2 saw the new players split into Development and Performance groups to join the existing squads for a second day of trials. Spirits were high in both teams, and a scrimmage at the end of the day meant that the new recruits were met with the usual competitiveness seen at every inter-squad scrimmage.
The weekend ended with some fantastic feedback from players new and old, and after some tough decisions from the coaching staff, a few days later we were able to inform our selected players which squads they would be playing with. After an extremely competitive weekend, we also had some movement with current squad members, proving that it really is all to play for at every squad weekend.
